Sustainability Adviser

Whangarei, New Zealand

Reference: 6889070

Here at Whangarei District Council we take genuine pride in having one of New Zealand's most welcoming and supportive work environments. Satisfaction comes from knowing we make a difference with the work we do. While our organisation is small enough for independent work to be valued, it's also big enough to make an impact within our community. Our continually developing culture is built around principles of delivering for our customers, our tikanga, and working collaboratively with our community.

To support us in our mahi, we are currently seeking a sustainability champion keen to help drive and embed sustainability within our organisation.

Based within our city centre civic facility, this role sits within our Waste Minimisation Department and is responsible for managing the measurement and reporting of the Council's operating emissions, as well as developing an emissions reduction plan that influences Council planning processes to support implementation and achievement of set targets.

Our Sustainability Advisor will also be responsible for supporting the organisation to identify and respond to sustainability-related risks, ensuring these are embedded, where relevant, in all Council activities and considered in decision-making processes. This role also involves working with teams across Council and other stakeholders to build sustainability capability, support delivery of initiatives, and embed sustainable practices into everyday operations and projects.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following:

  • A tertiary qualification in environmental science, sustainability or a related field.
  • Experience in a role with sustainability as a main feature.
  • Understanding of emissions measurement methodologies (e.g. GHG protocol, ISO14064).
  • Knowledge of relevant climate change and sustainability policies, legislation, guidance and standards.
  • Experience of successfully working across all levels of an organisation with the ability to adapt effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to convey information across a variety of mediums and influence others.
