Acquisitions Librarian

Whangarei, New Zealand

Reference: 6887165

At Whangārei District Council, our libraries play a key role in fostering learning, connection, and discovery across the district. We are seeking an Acquisitions Librarian who enjoys working behind the scenes, supporting our Collection Managers to meet the needs of our library patrons by sourcing books and resources that are current, relevant, and accessible.

About the role

As our Acquisitions Librarian, you'll support the Team Leader - Technical and Digital Services in managing the end-to-end process of obtaining materials for our library collections. This includes coordinating the receiving, payments and processing of library materials, including raising purchase orders, processing invoices, managing supplier relationships, and ensuring materials are received, processed and discoverable within our Library Management System in a timely manner.

You'll work closely with collections managers and cataloguing staff to ensure new acquisitions meet customer needs and are accurately processed. The role involves reviewing and improving acquisition processes, assisting with tenders, and training staff in acquisitions procedures. Like all of our librarians, you'll also contribute to frontline customer service across Central and branch libraries, including rostered Saturday shifts, helping to create a welcoming and inclusive library environment for our community.

About you

You're organised, methodical, and comfortable working with systems, processes, and data, and you take pride in seeing things through from start to finish. With a strong understanding of library operations, publishing, and acquisitions workflows, you bring sound judgement and problem‑solving skills to your work, along with a keen eye for accuracy and compliance — particularly around budgeting, copyright, and licensing.

You enjoy working collaboratively and communicating effectively with colleagues, suppliers, and customers, and you're motivated by contributing to high‑quality library services that meet the diverse needs of our community. With a strong customer service ethos, a good grasp of library technologies, and a willingness to share your knowledge and support others, you thrive in a team environment that values connection, continuous improvement, and working together to achieve meaningful outcomes.
