Planners! Join us in shaping the future of our district.

We're looking for a planner passionate about strategic and spatial planning for our team. This is a unique opportunity to be front and centre of regional spatial planning for Te Tai Tokerau and to influence how our communities grow and thrive. You will be involved in developing strategies and plans that reflect the multi-functional nature of this work and help us respond to the fast-evolving landscape of Resource Management Reform.

As a Strategic Planner, you'll work in a team that works collaboratively across Council and with external partners to ensure our strategies are not only well-designed but successfully implemented. You'll bring fresh thinking, the ability to connect with people, and expert knowledge to help guide decision-making and deliver outcomes that matter.

We are open to applicants early in their career through to 5 years' experience. In particular, the role will have a keen focus on Resource Management Reform and the spatial planning requirements within.

What you'll do

  • Contribute to strategic and spatial planning processes at various scales, including participating in cross-Council project teams or regional projects.
  • Build strong relationships with staff across the organisation, elected members, tangata whenua, senior leadership, government agencies, and community sectors.
  • Provide expert advice on trends, legislation, and policy to support informed decision-making.
  • Introduce innovative approaches to help achieve Council's strategic goals.
  • Conduct research and analysis to develop sound strategies and policies, including spatial planning.
  • Develop and deliver engagement plans that connect with our communities.
  • Represent Council on external groups and partnerships.

What you'll bring

  • A relevant tertiary qualification and minimum of 2 years' experience in a comparable role.
  • Specialist knowledge in areas such as resource management, social and human sciences, local government process and local or central government legislation. Skills in other areas are also desirable, including GIS, community engagement, and social and human sciences.
  • Strong project management skills and experience leading complex initiatives.
  • Experience of working effectively with Māori and diverse communities.
  • A collaborative mindset and a passion for shaping the future.
