Risk Management Adviser
Whangarei District Council is seeking a Risk Management Adviser to lead and evolve our risk and assurance programmes. This is a pivotal role within our Democracy and Assurance Department, supporting Council's strategic objectives and ensuring robust governance through effective risk oversight, internal audit, and insurance management.
What You'll Do
- Team leadership with a caring and collaborative approach
- Provide effective management and oversight of Council's assurance activities including but not limited to risk management, insurance, and official information requests.
- Manage internal audit and insurance portfolios.
- Provide strategic reporting to the Risk and Audit Committee.
- Coordinate official information requests and oversee the delegation register.
- Champion a culture of assurance and continuous improvement.
What does "Good" look like in this role?
This is a busy team with an increasing demand on our resources, particularly with regard to LGOIMAs. Success in this role will include demonstrable support of the team's workload while collaboratively identifying systems and processes that increase efficiency and effectiveness. That includes positive interaction with other parts of council to streamline processes and increase awareness of the LGOIMA, Risk and Insurance responsibilities.
What You'll Bring
- A tertiary qualification in business or equivalent experience.
- Proven ability to build strong organisational systems and governance relationships.
- Strategic thinking and deep understanding of risk, compliance, and audit principles.
- Political acumen and cultural adaptability, including embracing Tikanga.
- Knowledge of the Local Government Act and LGOIMA is a plus—but a willingness to learn is key.
- Knowledge and/or understanding of Risk Management Standard ISO31000:2009
