About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Building Approvals and Compliance Team! As a Building Approvals and Compliance Officer, you will play a key role in shaping the Whangārei District and supporting its communities. You will join our team of five, carrying out the Territorial Authority functions of the Building Compliance department, ensuring effective and efficient monitoring, compliance, and enforcement services.
No two days are the same, and your responsibilities will include:
- Conducting swimming pool inspections,
- Responding to stormwater complaints,
- Assessing earthquake-prone buildings,
- Inspecting alcohol licensing,
- Responding to, investigating, and resolving all cases of non-compliant building work within our district,
- Issuing relevant documentation including certificates of acceptance, certificates of public use, and amended compliance schedules,
- Maintaining excellent records and reports on all compliance investigations and inspections.
Ultimately, we aim to keep construction activities in our district safe. You will work closely with our community to educate and develop knowledge around building compliance. When complaints arise, you will be responsible for responding to them and making recommendations for enforcement action. If enforcement action is required, you will manage it through to the preparation and presentation of evidence before the court, where necessary.
About You
You are a confident communicator with proven resilience. You enjoy solving problems and have experience making informed, sound decisions and managing them through to execution. Additionally, you will demonstrate:
- Excellent investigation skills,
- Strong interpersonal ability and a calm composure,
- A natural ability and passion for educating stakeholders clearly and concisely,
- Competent understanding of the relevant legislation and obligations related to monitoring, compliance, and enforcement action,
- A full, clean NZ Drivers Licence,
- Thorough, up-to-date understanding and practical working knowledge of the Building Act,
- Ability and confidence to prepare and present evidence to Court,
- Knowledge and experience in Building Warrant of Fitness requirements and compliance schedules would be an advantage.
