Policy Analyst (Bylaws)

Whangarei, New Zealand

Reference: 6092750

It is a great time to work with us here at Whangarei District Council. As our district continues to grow, we have responded with an exciting strategy and policy programme which covers a wide variety of issues from city centre regeneration, climate change and managing growth. To support us in the successful delivery of our strategy and policy work, we are looking for skilled and qualified people who are eager to help to shape the Whangarei District and its communities.

Due to an internal promotion we currently have an opportunity for a Policy Analyst (Bylaws) to join our Strategic Planning Team. With a reputation for innovative thinking and community engagement on sometimes hotly debated projects our team of strategists need someone who is a great communicator, a creative thinker and can deliver high quality strategic projects.

As our bylaws specialist, you will be working on, and leading, a variety of policy and bylaw projects as well as having the opportunity to work outside of the bylaws space by getting involved in the development and review of wider strategic policies and strategies. You will be researching background information, developing policy options, actively involved in consultation and will finalise the policy or bylaw with key stakeholders and elected members.

You'll be part of a team with expertise in a number of areas including strategy development, design, urban planning and data analysis. As the successful candidate you will compliment this skill set but also bring along additional expertise in the local government act, policy analysis and bylaws or policy development that will expand the capability of the team.

If this role has sparked your interest we'd love to hear from you if you're able to demonstrate some or all of the following:

  • Experience in policy and/or bylaw development
  • Well-developed research and analytical skills, including quantitative and qualitative analysis
  • The ability to successfully work with a varied portfolio of planning and policy work
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to foster meaningful relationships with key stakeholders
  • Innovative solutions to strategic urban, rural and environmental planning issues
  • The ability to work with multi-disciplinary project teams that have delivered high quality planning outcomes
  • Engagement and consultation skills with a variety of different communities.

The projects attached to this position will be varied but also offer exciting opportunities for an interesting work programme. Combined with an award winning culture in an organisation focused on values based decision making we think making this the next step in your career may just be the best decision you'll make this year.

At Whangarei District Council we take our reputation as a lifestyle destination seriously and consider a range of flexible working and life balance options for those that want to work in a professional and progressive environment while still having the time to take advantage of everything our district has to offer. In addition, our employment package includes Health Insurance, Life Insurance, payment of a professional membership, continuous development opportunities and an active social club plus much more.

Whangarei is a district on the rise. It is Northland's only city and largest commercial centre. Nestled between forest clad hills at the heart of the beautiful Whangarei Harbour, nowhere in the district is more than 40 kilometres away from our spectacular coastline and commuting to WDC's CBD location is a breeze.

There's a lot that'll make you 'Love it Here!'
